Looking to the Masters for Inspiration

Have you considered what attracts you to a particular painting or artist? Being aware of some of these elements will allow you to consciously work on bringing some of these out in your own work. Here are some questions you might consider when looking at a piece of artwork: What is it specifically about the artwork that you are responding to? Is it the use of color, line, contrast, texture, the simplicity or complexity of the piece, the emotional resonance, the subject, or the story? Who are some of your favorite artists?

One of the ways I approach the blank canvas is by drawing inspiration directly from a painting I like. This doesn’t mean trying to reproduce the painting; it means gathering specific information about a technique, quality or mood that I can tease out and play with in my own unique way.

I place the painting near me at the worktable and begin to identify the elements of the piece that draw me in. Once I decide which elements I want to concentrate on, I sketch out a simple version with my graphite pencil. Once I have a rough drawing, I start painting, allowing myself plenty of room to change anything or everything in my initial plan as the piece evolves. Remember, hold your initial plan loosely and, once you’ve started, let your painting tell you where it wants to go.
